Widely recognized Social & Educational Entrepreneur; Chairman & Managing Director-AISECT;
Chancellor-Dr. C. V. Raman University; Chancellor-AISECT University; leading litterateur and Poet of Hindi Literature

Santosh Choubey is a prominent social entrepreneur, eminent educationist, leading thinker, celebrated litterateur and poet of Hindi literature and a senior Ashoka fellow, whose experience spans through several worlds simultaneously. A visionary, he is also a widely recognized entrepreneurial pioneer in the area of ICT and skills-based Education & Services Dissemination for semi-urban and rural India. Earlier on, he forfeited the Indian Civil Services as well as the Indian Engineering Services to pursue his dream of taking Information Technology to the rural community, especially in Hindi and other regional languages.

Born in 1955 in Khandwa Madhya Pradesh, Santosh Choubey did his schooling from Govt. School Khandwa and completed his education with a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (NIT, Bhopal). Consequently, he also got selected into the Indian Engineering Services (1976) and the Indian Civil Services (1981). He made the decision of forgoing the civil services and pursuing his interest in the areas of Science and Technology and joined Bharat Electronics Limited (New Delhi). Later on, he worked with IDBI as a consultant in Bhopal.

While in New Delhi, he was the founder member of the Delhi Science Forum, a Science and Technology policy planning NGO. Working part time in the Delhi Science Forum, his interest in Science, Society and Developmental issues grew further. It was around this time that the concept of AISECT began to evolve.

Around early 1980s, when literacy and science and technology popularisation were the key imperatives for India education system and Information Technology was just around the corner with a promise of being a powerful technological tool, Mr. Choubey, who was then stationed in Bhopal, noticed that more than 90% of India’s population was oblivious to the progress and advancement of urban India and the rest of the developed world in this field. He realised that language, creating access to the last mile and a self-sustainable model of rural and social development through usage of ICT are going to be the defining parameters for narrowing the urban rural digital and development divide. It was at this time that Santosh Choubey decided to play the role of an ‘enterprising leader’ and began to explore ideas and models to further his cause and then with a bunch of like-minded people, he decided to form the Society for Electronics and Computer Technology (SECT) in 1985 in Bhopal – an organisation which was later rechristened as AISECT in 1997.

An organization which is widely recognized as the pioneer of IT Enabled Multi - purpose rural kiosk model and based on which, later on, Govt of India’s National e-Governance plan was formulated, today AISECT has emerged as India’s leading Education, Training, Skill Development, Services and e-Governance network with over 20,000 centres spread across 27 States and 3 Union Territories and having educated over 16 lakh students, essentially in semi urban and rural areas, many of whom are successfully employed at various locations or have become self-employed with AISECT’s handholding. The entrepreneurial thought behind the workings of AISECT was strong enough for it to become a World Bank–IIM (A) Case Study in 1999. In 2005, Mr. Santosh Choubey received the coveted Indian Innovation Award from the then president of India, Mr. Abdul Kalam. Then on, under his able leadership AISECT has received several prestigious awards like the Schwab Foundation’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year (Finalist) Award instituted by the World Economic Forum, the Ashoka Senior Fellowship, the NASSCOM I.T. Innovation Award, the Manthan Award South Asia & Asia Pacific, the NASSCOM EMERGE 50 Leader Award, the Indian Innovation Award, the Golden Icon National e-Governance Award, the Asian Forum i4D Award, the TiE Lumis Partners Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, the National CSI Award, the eGov Award for Best ICT in Financial Inclusion, the World Education Summit Award, the World HRD Congress Award, the FIPS Award, the SKOCH Corporate Leadership Award and many more.

His passion saw the organization gaining greater heights and spreading in various areas such as Education, Vocational Training, Skill Development, e-Governance, Financial Inclusion, UID Services, Online Learning, Pre-schools, Schools and School related services. Santosh Choubey also led the organization in setting up leading Educational Institutions in Central India: Dr. C V Raman University - Chhattisgarh, the first private university of Central India, AISECT University in Bhopal and SCOPE Group of Institutions also in Bhopal.

Besides being a true visionary in areas of sustainable and inclusive growth, employment and education, Mr. Choubey is also a noted writer and poet of Hindi Literature. His first work on Computers in Hindi language: “Computer Aapke Liye” went on to sell millions of copies and broke all records. It eventually won esteemed awards like the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Award for content creation in Hindi and the Meghnad Saha Award. Born to the renowned Educationist and writer of Hindi literature Shri J P Choubey “Vanmali”, Santosh has himself written three books of short stories namely हल्के रंग की कमीज, रेस्त्रां में दोपहर and ‘प्रतिनिधि कहानियां', two Novels titled “Rag Kedar” (राग केदार) and Kya Pata Comred Mohan (क्या पता कामरेड मोहन) and 3 compilations of poems “Kahin Aur Sach Honge Sapne (कहीं और सच होंगे सपने), ”Kona Dharti ka” (कोना धरती का) and “इस (अ)कवि समय में’ . His short stories have, over the years, been selected for dramatization at the National School of Drama and the Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal. He is also deeply passionate about the preservation of traditional, Indian folk music and has set up a studio dedicated to collecting fading music forms and preserving them. He has also established Vanmali Srijan Peeth, a not-for-profit organization in the memory of his father Late Shri Jagannath Prasad Choubey, for promoting literary and cultural activities among the present generation.

Santosh Choubey currently stays in Bhopal with his wife Vinita Choubey who is also the Editor of a leading Hindi Science and Electronics magazine: “Electroniki Aapke Liye”, along with Son Siddharth and Daughter – in – law Pallavi, both of whom are Management Graduates from SPJIMR Mumbai and are now leading various initiatives in the Organization. Santosh and Vinita also have a daughter Aditi, who along with her husband Nitin is working at AISECT as well. Both of them are Rural Management graduates from IRMA Anand and are holding key roles at the organization.

Currently, Santosh Choubey serves as the Chairman and Managing Director of AISECT, Chancellor at Dr. C.V. Raman University & AISECT University, a Fellow at the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers and a Honorary Chairman of State Resource Centre (MP).
